coverage tonight. >> reporter: cia director general david petraeus stepping down admitting he had an extramarital affair. the retired four star general saying in a letter to cia employees, "such behavior is unacceptable both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours." >> he has led america through some very, very difficult times. i think many of us are surprised that these kinds of things happen. >> reporter: the general's affair with his biographer paula broadwell was revealed in the course of an fbi investigation. according to her website, she of embedded with him in afghanistan from july, 2010 to july, 2011. general petraeus has been married for nearly 40 years to holly petraeus. they met when he was a cadet at west point. he led a distinguished 37 year career in the u.s. army eventually leading the u.s. military campaigns in iraq and afghanistan. president obama issuing a

statement saying, "my thoughts and prayers are with dave and holly petraeus who has done so much to help military families through her own work. i wish them the very best at this difficult time." general petraeus was sworn in as cia director in september, 2011. his resignation comes just days ahead of key congressional hearings about the benghazi terror attack. he is no longer scheduled to testify. >> one way or the other we should have general petraeus testify. if not this week, then soon after because i don't see how we can put the whole picture together without general petraeus' testimony. >> reporter: a senate intelligence committee aide says cia deputy director michael morell who now serves as acting director of the agency will testify in place of petraeus thursday. certainly a lot of unanswered questions tonight. one, being why it took so long for general petraeus to resign long after his affair was discovered. earlier tonight we asked that question to ronald kessler, the

chief washington correspondent for newsmax.com. here's some of that. >> the president, of course, was informed about this right away and he wanted to wait to ask for his resignation until after the election obviously to avoid some kind of embarrassment to give the other side some ammunition to create more controversy. >> kessler says since the general's resignation there's been lots of conspiracy theories thrown around including that his resignation had something to do with the consulate attack in libya. kessler says those rumors in his opinion are false. defense company lockheed martin has fired its president and upcoming ceo over a relationship with a subordinate. 51-year-old christopher kubicik was scheduled to take the position in january, but now an interim president has been named. the edge on maryland

tonight, mount rainier police called in reenforcements from prince george's county to help patrol the streets after a big spike in home burglaries. there's been 19 break-ins in less than a month and two more attempts. fox 5's audrey barnes is in the newsroom tonight following the investigation. >> most of these break-ins have occurred during the day when no one is home. on tuesday a student off for election day helped police make wo arrests, but the burglaries are still happening and police say residents need to be on alert. for the past month thieves have been targeting neighborhoods of single family homes in mount rainier and brentwood using a common ploy to pick their targets. >> the general m.o. is there's usually two people involved. they'll go up and knock on the door, try the door knob, see if anybody is home, if anybody answers the door. >> reporter: if no one is home, one guy will go around the back and look for a way. in. >> pry open or break open a window.

once they get inside they'll let the guy standing guard out front know. he'll come in the front. they'll take cash, any valuables they can readily take. >> pretty unnerving, but that's happening in our little neighborhood where people are -- you know, we all know our neighbors. >> reporter: when two guys knocked on cynthia lapp's door on election derek her 17-year- old daughter refused to answer. in -- day, her 17-year-old daughter refused to answer. instead she called the police. >> she had the police on one phone, the neighbor on the other phone and he gave a description to her to give to the police. so it was really wonderful neighborhood cooperation to make it happen. >> they were in possession of stolen property taken in a bringwood burglary and they were also in possession of a -- brentwood burglary and they were also in possession of a loaded .45 caliber handgun also stolen in a burglary in brentwood. >> reporter: the burglaries haven't stopped even though there were two arrests.

there was one here to 30th 1st street last night. a woman -- 31st street last night. a woman left her house at 8 a.m. and when she returned, someone had broken in through a rear kitchen window. prince george's county county have offered additional patrol officers to mount rainier police to look for suspicious people in the neighborhood and officers say they could use help from the 9,000 residents of the city, too. keep your eyes open and your property secured. >> definitely going to beef up security around the home, not going to forget to lock doors, maybe lock them twice if i have to. >> reporter: thanks to the cooperative effort between the two departments investigators have also identified a 14-year- old who they say could be responsible for more than a dozen break-ins. they need more tips, though, and if you see anything or anyone suspicious, mount rainier police want to hear from you. their number is 301-985-6566. will, back to you. let's stay in maryland now.

in prince george's county a maryland state trooper was hurt after being hit by a stolen car this morning in college park. the trooper was trying to stop the car when he was hit, only minor injuries. police later caught up with the stolen car and managed to get the driver. new developments tonight in that whistleblower lawsuit filed by a d.c. police captain who claims he was demoted when testified about department policy on police escorts. a d.c. superior court judge ruled today the case filed by hilton burton can move forward, although the judge threw out one of his claims. burton testified before the city council police escorts were common when the issue came up after actor charlie sheen was given a police escort. burton's statements contradicted testimony from police chief cathy lanier. utility crews in the northeast are slowly turning the lights back on after that area was hit by back to back storm systems. still hundreds of thousands of customers in new york and new jersey remain in the dark and

more importantly without heat. during a news conference today governor chris christie said he expects operations to start getting back to normal monday, but he says the recovery process is still far from over. >> i'll be asking the federal government to do whatever it takes to get this job done. this is our katrina. i expect the people of this state to be treated with the same level of compassion and generosity that the citizens of louisiana and mississippi and alabama were treated in the aftermath of hurricane katrina. >> to cope with the giant lines at the gas pumps, new york has followed new jersey's lead by issuing a mandatory gas rationing system. coming up on the news edge at 11:00 a new journey for homeless vets, t first step towards a new home and a new beginning coming your way next. >> and gary's got your weekend forecast. got to say, this is sounding promising.

welcome back. they fought for our country and now they need their country to fight for them. homeless vets are getting some help in d.c. this weekend. fox 5's beth parker has that story. >> reporter: with the slam of a door they begin a journey. rosslyn isn't just looking for an apartment. she's starting over. >> there were times i slept in my car and the worst thing was where do you go to the restroom when you need to? >> reporter: this person who at times has had no bathroom to use is an iraq war veteran. here's her resume, a masters degree in business and undergraduate degree from american university. >> i have a lot of skills, but i didn't have a job. >> reporter: she lost her home. >> we don't believe in saying to you here's a bunch of good luck, god bless. believe in helping you each step of the way.

>> reporter: the d.c. housing authority's veterans affairs supportive housing program is giving ella a voucher for an apartment. now through this program they've already placed 130 veterans in homes and apartments in d.c. this year. when the real estate market turned, d.c.-based sanford capital had a lot of vacant apartments. they've partnered with the housing authority to help themselves and the vets. >> we don't see it as a risk. we see it as an opportunity and that opportunity is to assist and provide a veteran who served our country and give them the resources and kind of the jump start to provide housing for them. >> reporter: 33% of homeless males are veterans. >> i think that the people that we served in our country let us down because we should come home and shouldn't have to go through this. we should come home and be able to get out of the military and get liveable job. >> reporter: albert strong was in the army for 10 years including serving in vietnam.

he never wanted to rely on family for help. >> i wanted to be a man and stand on my own two feet. >> reporter: these vets remain optimistic. ella stays with a woman from her church and applies for five jobs a day. >> hopefully very soon i'll have a place of my own to lay my head. nearly half a million suvs have been recalled for a dangerous defect. is yours one of them? shawn yancy has tonight's fox 5 top five. >> up first tonight, will, the nationwide meningitis outbreak is still growing. no. 5, health officials in virginia are reporting 50 suspected cases of fungal meningitis that. number includes three west virginia residents and two deaths. the cdc says hundreds of people have gotten sick and 31 have died after receiving tainted steroid shots. no. 4, you might want to check your cab nets because nestle is recalling some nesquick chocolate powder over possible salmonella concerns which includes 10.9, 21.8 and 41.7-

ounce canisters. this comes after one of nestle's suppliers recalled an ingredient used in the product due to a possible salmonella contamination. no. 3, chrysler is recalling more than 900,000 jeep grand cherokee and jeep liberty suvs worldwide. there's concern a potential defect can cause the air bags to inflate unexpectedly. the recall affects 2002 to 2004 grand cherokees and 2002 to 2003 liberty suvs. no. 2, montgomery county maryland has a smoking ban in restaurants and near playgrounds. later this month the county council member will introduce a bill to ban smoking on county property. the bill would ban smoking on any property owned or leased by the county except public right- of-ways. and no. 1 tonight, it is a sure sign the holidays are just around the corner. the salvation army kicked off its annual red kettle drive today. the organization hopes the campaign will collect $1.6 million this year. if it reaches the goal, that would be a 15% increase over

last year. will, that's a look at tonight's fox 5 top five. thank you, shawn. turning to weather now, boy, after everything we've had, especially our friends to the northeast, it is time for a little warm-up, gary. >> it will be good for them, just a little sunshine will mean a lot, something like that. it won't be quite as cold. so those folks that don't have power obviously, you can realize just a little bit there will go a long, long way. we'll be real nice here. we were good today, a little breezy this morning. temperatures did stay in the 50s, but this afternoon once that breeze broke up and calmed down and the sun was out, temperature up to about 58 degrees for a high. so it was real, real nice. let's do this tomorrow. let's get up to 64, middle 60s in the area, sunshine, too. 68 degrees for a high temperature on veterans day which is sunday. thank you for your service, by the way. sunny skies tomorrow and possibly -- i don't want to make a big deal out of this --

but possibly on sunday some places could be up into the lower 70s. that would really be a bonus. temperatures right now for reagan and dulles and bwi all in the 40s, 45 degrees in town and a couple 40-degree readings for dulles and for bwi marshall. it's getting cold in the suburbs now. you can see temperatures are dropping down to the 30s out there, frederick 34 degrees, dulles 40, manassas already down to 36 degrees, culpeper the same, winchester 37 degrees. clear skies, light winds, high pressure building in, so temperatures are dropping and they'll continue to drop out there as well. i didn't believe earlier this evening that we would be able to get down into the low, low 30s and possibly the upper 20s, but at the rate that some of these numbers are going, i think that's going to be possible, but a real dry atmosphere. so we start off coal. we'll warm up nicely -- cold. we'll warm up nicely back above

normal, plenty of sunshine. high pressure is building in and stays with us this weekend. it shifts off a little sunday. basically that means warmer, temperatures in the upper 60s sunday, pretty good amounts of sunshine, an upper cloud possible. 42 degrees tonight, mostly clear, obviously some 30s in the suburbs, really nice weekend ahead, sunny tomorrow morning, sunny at noon time, sunny in the afternoon and temperatures making it up to the lower to mid-60s. here's a quick look at your fox 5 accuweather seven-day forecast, in the 60s the next few days and then we have some rain coming in by tuesday of next week. the skins aren't playing, but i'm sure lindsay murphy found some sports to talk about. >> this is the verizon 4g lte sports desk with lindsay murphy. >> just a couple things going on tonight. sometimes teams get to ease into the season, not the case for the terps facing the

kentucky wildcats tonight, but mark sturgeon's team was up for the challenge after a slow start. des wells was eligible to play as they play in brooklyn. 1st half up the floor howard sees len in the paint. the lob, the flush, 23 points len. maryland down 49-36 at the half. archie goodwin drive finishes the alley-oop. wildcats by 15. then the terps went on a 15-0 run, howard another nifty pass inside to shaquille clair for the dunk tied 53-53. eight minutes left. howard to a wide open freshman seth allen. he buries his second consecutive three. maryland in the lead 59-57. former terp al better king leading the cheers. final seconds maryland down three. keyshawn howard takes it right at noel. the terps with a gritty performance but not enough falling to third ranked tennessee 72-69.

was tied 32-32 at the break. 2nd half game tied 50-50 until joe harris gets the pullup three. he had 19 points. cavaliers are up by three, but this game would be tied again. just over a minute to go, mason with the ball, allen with the stepback, three and it's good. mason up 60-57. they hold on for the 63-59 victory. the first time ever that george mason has beat virginia. don't go away, more hoops coming up including the wizards still in the hunt for their first win of the season. we'll be right back. ♪

the not how you start but how you finish. at least the wizards hope that's the case because even though they've been in all three games they played this season, they did not win one of them. tonight another chance at a first win against the bucks. bradley beal had his best game wednesday 16 points. early 1st quarter they come up with the steal. in transition they go to trevor a visa. he throws it -- ariza. he throws it down. they would trail 56-47 at the half. 2nd half wizards trying to dig out score 10 straight, the big steal and pass to a wide open bradley beal, his first nba dunk. the wizards are within three. 4th quarter the deficit seven. monta ellis on the right wing drivers in for the layin, game high 22. the bucks lead back up to 9. the wizards sloppy down the stretch, less than 30 to go, a

bad pass. ellis goes the other way, beal the hard foul sendses ellis flying, goes to help him up and gets pushed by brendan jennings and beal ejected. that's all she wrote. their fou straight 101-91. davey johnson and the nationals agreed on terms next season. both sides say next year will be his final as the nats manager. silver slugger adam laroche declined the one year $13.3 million offer. he's a free agent. the nationals can still sign laroche but they will receive a draft pick if he leavesful that's a wrap on sports -- leaves. that's a wrap on sports, but the news edge will be right back. good night. where others fail, droid powers through.

taking the edge off tonight, the little girl who broke down in tears over the election is happy with the results. the last time we saw little 4- year-old abigail evans she was having a meltdown. here it is. she cried, told her mother she was tired about hearing of baronc obama and mitt romney. her mother posted a new video of a much happier abigail. >> the election is over. >> who's going to be the president? >> barack -- >> obama. >> yes. >> yea! >> well, as you can imagine, she is happy the whole thing is over. now you have the news edge. i'll see you next week on the 5:00 newscast.
